Canada has a dark colonial past; the state deliberately attempted to erase Indigenous people and their way of life. From policies such as outlawing languages, cultural practices, and forcibly removing children from families, Canada has a long way to go toward reconciliation. “Divisions, Reconciliation and Unity” examines how reconciliation can be achieved between Indigenous people and settlers via politics, law, economics, and culture.
This interdisciplinary summer school will highlight how First Nations, Inuit and Métis people are making considerable advances in all aspects of life. Once reconciliation is finally achieved, the school will examine how Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples of Canada can live in harmony and in a unified nation. From an Indigenous perspective, the summer school will explore the complex historical and present-day divisions and experiences of their peoples.
The course will also include some guest lectures from German professors from the University of Rostock and Korean professors from Ewha University, who will compare the Canadian experience of divisions, reconciliation and unity with their country’s respective experiences. These guest lectures will show some avenues of learning between the two countries.
The target group includes international students from the field of History, Political Science, Economics, Humanities, Sociology, Demography, Philosophy, Law, Journalism and Cultural Studies with strong marks in Bachelor‘s or Master‘s programs as well as postgraduate students.
